MJA may be located in an industrial area of Santa Cruz but it sure has all the hallmarks of a great tasting room: outside patio with fire pits, fun adventurous winemaker, and delicious wines with creative names. The winemaker has a great attitude and it is contagious. Each bottle tells a different story for its namesake. A surfer at heart but winemaker by trade, MJA seeks out the best places to get each grape. In Santa Cruz, you don’t have to look far to get da kine Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. But his Cabs and Merlots come from other more heated areas better known for that type like Howell Mountain and Rutherford.
This guy knows the secret of life! He knows it takes a smart scrappy winemaker to source the best grapes from the best places and he also knows how unique it is to serve these other varietals in a coastal market. Yet, he has the smile, calmness, and easy feeling that is native to Santa Cruz.
