Touting the longest growing season, Edna Valley Vineyard makes complex and robust wines that represent this valley’s potential. What’s interesting is their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir Burgundian wines were served next to Bordeaux varietals like Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. We enjoyed savoring how these varietals get along like good neighbors.
This spot is worth a visit for any wine geek simply to study their demonstration vineyard. Just outside their tasting room doors are 14 short rows of vines, each row illustrating a different varietal or trellis technique. So, you can see how a Vertical Shoot Positioned (VSP) trellis allows the Sangiovese grapes to get more sunlight and cool breezes simply by lifting the leaves that shade the fruit. Their Merlot vines avoid sunburn because of a Ballerina trellis system which sounds way better than SPF.
